CT: SOS. Emergency session tonight at 9+1. 7pm.

“What’s 9+1?” Shania says out loud, bewildered.

“Ten,” Prescott says, straight-faced, and she gives him a look. He laughs then. “It’s a bowling alley in SoBR.”

“Guess I’m going bowling tonight,” Shania says, staring at the text.

“She must be upset,” he says. “She always goes there when she’s upset.”

“Any idea what about?” she says as she texts back a thumbs-up.

“Probably stressing about something that’s already happened,” he says, rolling his eyes. “Catherine spends about half her life living in the past.”

Shania swallows, thinking about what she’d seen in the library. Would he laugh at her for the blistered feeling she carries in her chest? Is she living in the past? He squints down at the ground again. The two men have moved on, their argument disappearing with them up the street.

“I’d like to paint Blue Rock from up here one day,” he says.

“What’s stopping you?”

“Knowing how to paint, for one,” he says. She catches the tail end of his smile. “But right now I think I just imagine it one way and it’s not there yet. I’ll paint it wrong because I envision it differently than it actually is.”

“And you envision it how?”

“Clean,” he says simply. Then, without looking at her, he reaches for her hand, taking it in his. His hands are soft, his thumb like the tongue of some velvet-mouthed animal as he rubs it across her knuckles. It’s somehow unnerving, to feel this soft hand and hear these sharp words. She focuses instead on the world of SoBR stretching out before them. He imagines a better kingdom in the camera of his mind, but with his thumb stroking her skin she tells herself it doesn’t matter. Whatever kingdom this is, he is king and she is queen. She enjoys the feeling of the crown.
